Osvaldo Contreras @osvaldoics In Sydney, 🇦🇺 prices range around $40,000-45,000 AUD a year.
Without child support for new immigrants, the situation is not far worse

A postdoc with a newborn just told me daycare in Boston is ~$30,000/year 🤯 Despite having dual incomes, the cost is so prohibitive they are considering just going into industry… I wish there was a mechanism similar to the NIH Diversity Supplement to help parents with new borns

Go into industry, now! Work two jobs, with three side gigs. Write and consult using your creds from industry. If you are not working 60 hours a week on “now” and 40 more on “future”, you are not a “real” parent.

If you are not each working 60 hours a week on “now” and 40 more on “future”, you are not “real” parents. Move to a cheap country with good internet and work virtual. Tell your obsolete university to get with it.

Tell your obsolete and clueless university to get with it. Support your parents and grandparents, have them teach and help raise the kids. Adopt someone in exchange for room and board and care. No one owes you anything. No one cares, certainly not employers who only enrich a few on the backs of everyone else. I expect all universities to fail or be replaced. There is no emoji for “grim but practical advice on surviving with kids”. You will survive most likely. Best to not expect anything, but remain hopeful and caring where you can. Build global networks for sharing, not paying.
